How to read the Bitcoin dominance chart

Dominance is a relative measure, not a price. It can rise while Bitcoin falls — if altcoins fall harder — and it can fall while Bitcoin rallies, if capital rotates faster into altcoins. Always read the dominance line together with the total market cap column above.

  • Dominance up, total market cap up: Bitcoin-led bull phase. Altcoins usually lag until dominance stalls.
  • Dominance up, total market cap down: risk-off. Traders rotate out of smaller caps into Bitcoin and stablecoins.
  • Dominance down, total market cap up: the classic altcoin season setup — new money is flowing past Bitcoin into the rest of the market.
  • Dominance down, total market cap down: Bitcoin is falling faster than alts, which is rare and usually short lived.
  • Rising stablecoin dominance means capital is parked on the sidelines — dry powder that has not yet chosen a market.

Dominance works best as context for level-based decisions. Pair it with Bitcoin price level indicators such as Max Pain, realized price and the 200-week moving average, or with the DMA analysis and cross analysis pages.

BTC dominance FAQ

What is BTC dominance?

BTC dominance is Bitcoin's share of the total cryptocurrency market capitalisation, expressed as a percentage. If the whole crypto market is worth $3 trillion and Bitcoin is worth $1.7 trillion, BTC dominance is roughly 57%.

How is Bitcoin dominance calculated?

Dominance = (Bitcoin market cap ÷ total crypto market cap) × 100. Market cap is circulating supply multiplied by price, so dominance moves when Bitcoin's price changes relative to the rest of the market, and also when new supply or new coins enter the market.

What does rising BTC dominance mean?

Rising dominance means capital is rotating into Bitcoin faster than into altcoins. It often happens in risk-off phases, when traders exit smaller caps, and in early bull phases, when Bitcoin leads the market higher.

What does falling BTC dominance mean?

Falling dominance means altcoins are outperforming Bitcoin. Sustained declines alongside a rising total market cap are commonly described as altcoin season; declines during a falling total market cap are usually just Bitcoin dropping faster.
